“A Comedy of Errors”

The Dordt University Theatre Department will present Shakespeare’s “A Comedy of Errors” as their spring mainstage production. The actors involved have worked to make sure the Shakespearean text is clear and easy to follow, as well as crafting physically expressive characters and comedic style through the design and the props. The goal is for the play feel fresh and relatable to the audience.

“The character types are familiar,” Professor of Theater Arts and show director Laurel Koerner said. “And the plot is funny in a way just about anyone would enjoy.”

The plot is a humorous tale following two sets of twins, mistaken identities, and the ensuing confusion around them. The theatre department has combined the familiar characters with modern references, putting their own spin on the old story.

Senior history education and theatre student, Anna Janssen, is playing Luciana in the play. She has appreciated the humor and true comedy during production.

“There is a perception that Shakespeare has to be stiff no matter what style the show is,” Janssen said. “[But] this show has cardboard cutouts, baguettes as swords, and cabbage patch dolls. My side hurts after every rehearsal.”

The cast has been working since November to master the text and characters. Students have invested their coveted social time, into memorizing lines and attending rehearsals. The amount of commitment has led to freedom in the play, new discoveries, and inventing comedic pieces.

“A Comedy of Errors” will be presented at the Te Paske Theater on Feb. 21 through 24 at 7:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. matinee on the 24th
